Hello everyone. Praise the Lord!
I came in the driver's room when I first came in for the day. Sitting at the table was Mike Adams. He was just starting to and at the table looking over his paperwork. He normally starts an hour before me, so I asked him why.
He said he only had one load today and decided to come in a little later. As he sat there he looked over at me sitting at the next table. He said did you hear that I had a day off! I told him, "no I did not hear that, What happened?"
He said he had his windshield replaced in his truck and they did not fix the camera back on the new windshield. The truck cameras that we have record everything that's happening in front of the truck, but it does not record anything inside the cab. But because it was not a fix to the new windshield, the camera just swung around on the wire.
While the camera is swing around during the day it would occasionally point at Mike in a driver's seat. He said he had to pull up 200 ft in the plant, to spot the trailer under the loading rack, so he didn't bother putting those seatbelt. The office people saw the camera footage and gave Mike a one-day suspension.
Management here at Trimac Transportation hates their older drivers, and is always looking for ways to keep them in line. It could have very easily gave Mike a lecture on safety, and let it go at that. But they want to give him a suspension and make sure it was on his record.
I told Mike that if I have to move my truck up the short distance I don't put my seatbelt on either. Sometimes the rules can get a little restrictive and silly. Safety rules are not for safety they're really to control the employees! Like then warn me that if I had a loose camera I'd better cover it up or something!
That led into a good discussion about retirement. I told Mike I was looking to retire as soon as I can, which my wife and I think it's maybe next year. Mike says about three years until his retirement. These large companies then wonder why they can't hire people, and don't understand why their employees care anymore!
