After my delivery of Freon to Daikin Thursday afternoon, I found out my second load had been canceled. I didn't think anything of it, so I went back to the yard and parked my truck.
Later that day I found out Friday's and Mondays loads were also canceled. That's why I knew something happened ! I thought maybe there was a major accident at the factory, or the Covid-19 virus had a big outbreak!
But I came back Tuesday to do a load, they were still kind of full but they were able to take at least one load. Bob, the main maintenance guy was there and I asked him what was the problem over the weekend.
He shared with me that hackers from outside the country took over the computer server of the entire factory. This factory is run by its computer, the computer controls all the assembly lines and the robots bring in parts to assembly lines!
So when the hackers locked up the computer, the entire factory came to a sudden stop! The hackers demanded $2 million to release the computer server!
Daikin is a Japanese company and they didn't want to pay the hackers any money. So, Friday they decide to buy an entire new computer server with an emergency installation costing $3 million! It cost them more money but it came with much improved security against hackers.
So it took four-days to buy the server had installed and re-program all the equipment and assembly lines and robots and begin production again! A good example that computer security should not be taken for granted!
O, and by the way, the entire IT staff was terminated!
