Too Many People Doing It

Hello everyone.  Praise the Lord!

I was training a young man to drive a truck for Trimac Transportation. He worked for ten years in the junk car business. We both shared many stories together.

He started with a friend, who got the idea to buy junk cars, and sell junk cars for scrap. So they both pulled their money to buy a small flatbed truck with a winch.

They would drive around and look for junk cars to buy. Sometimes the owners want to sell, sometimes they didn't want to sell. Sometimes the owners want too much money. But most of the time they were happy to get rid of a junk car sitting around.

They would buy a junk car for two or three hundred dollars. They'd hook it onto the winch truck, and pull it onto the small flatbed. Before taking it to the junkyard, They would strip off the chrome, stereo equipment, and saw off the catalytic converters. All of those they would sell separately.

They did that for a long time. The price of scrap metal is about twenty-five dollars per pound. Then they noticed more and more people getting into that business. With more people getting in that business, the price of scrap metal started to drop. Eventually over time, it dropped to about eleven or twelve dollars per pound!

Eleven or twelve dollars per pound is not enough money to make it worthwhile anymore. And without hopes of the price going up with so many people in the business, they decide to do something else for a living. And that eventually brought him, to me, in my truck.

Have you ever been involved in the junk car business? If you have can you tell us about it in the comments section? If you enjoyed this story, and wish to catch all the future stories, you can click on the "follow" button at the top of the page.
